They may be chemical (artificial) or natural and are used to give colour to various products. Depending on their application, colourings are divided into several groups: food, cosmetic, textile, pharmaceutical and even technical.<\/p>\n<p>Colourings may come from natural sources, such as plants, animals or minerals, or be synthesised in chemical laboratories. Synthetic colourings are usually cheaper to produce and have a wider range of applications, but their use gives rise to controversy, particularly in the context of their effect on health.<\/p>\n<h2>Types of colourings<\/h2>\n<p>Colourings are divided into several categories, depending on their source and application:<\/p>\n<h3>Natural colourings<\/h3>\n<p>Natural colourings come from plants, animals or minerals. Their use has a long history, and some of them have been used for thousands of years. Examples of natural colourings are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><b>Plant colourings<\/b> \u2013 obtained from parts of plants, such as flowers, leaves and fruits, and also from minerals. Examples are curcumin (from turmeric), betalains (from beetroot) and anthocyanins (from berries and grapes).<\/li>\n<li><b>Animal colourings<\/b> \u2013 obtained from animal organisms, such as carmine (extracted from cochineal insects) or indigo blue (derived from certain insects or plants).<\/li>\n<li><b>Mineral colourings<\/b> \u2013 such as ochre or sienna, obtained from earth minerals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Synthetic colourings<\/h3>\n<p>Synthetic colourings are produced in chemical laboratories and have a wider application than natural colourings. Thanks to them food looks more attractive, which may influence its sales and its perceived value. Colourings are used in products such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Sweets (e.g. jellies, candies),<\/li>\n<li>Beverages (e.g. carbonated drinks, energy drinks),<\/li>\n<li>Fruit preserves (e.g. jams, marmalades),<\/li>\n<li>Frozen foods and ice cream,<\/li>\n<li>Bakery products (e.g. biscuits, cakes).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Food colourings are regulated by the appropriate legal provisions, which set the permissible levels of their use in individual products.<\/p>\n<h3>In cosmetics<\/h3>\n<p>Cosmetic colourings are used to give colour to products such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Lipsticks,<\/li>\n<li>Eyeshadows,<\/li>\n<li>Nail polishes,<\/li>\n<li>Creams and lotions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Colourings in cosmetics have to meet safety standards, because the skin and the mucous membranes are more sensitive to chemical substances than the digestive tract.<\/p>\n<h3>In the pharmaceutical industry<\/h3>\n<p>Pharmaceutical colourings are used in tablets, capsules and syrups in order to make the identification of medicines easier and to improve their appearance. In this case the colourings have to be safe and to meet strict standards, because they may be ingested by patients.<\/p>\n<h3>In the textile industry<\/h3>\n<p>Textile colourings are used to dye fabrics and materials. They make it possible to give clothing, upholstery or curtains the desired colour. Textile colourings are divided into natural and synthetic, and the choice of the appropriate colouring depends on the type of material and on the desired effect.<\/p>\n<h2>The great debate: synthetic vs. natural colourings<\/h2>\n<p>Although synthetic colourings offer greater stability and a lower cost of production, natural colourings are perceived as safer and more environmentally friendly. Natural colourings may, however, be more expensive and less stable, which limits their wide application in the food and cosmetics industries.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years consumer awareness of the potential risks associated with the excessive consumption of synthetic colourings has been growing, especially in the context of their effect on health, including the risk of allergies or problems with hyperactivity in children.
