Choline alfoscerate – definition, action and applications
Choline alfoscerate – definition, action and applications
What is choline alfoscerate?
Choline alfoscerate, also known as Alpha-GPC (L-alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine), is a natural chemical compound belonging to the group of choline phospholipids. It occurs in small amounts in the human brain and in some foods, such as offal or soy products. Most often, however, it is obtained from soy or sunflower lecithin. It is one of the most bioavailable sources of choline – a substance indispensable for the proper functioning of the nervous system.
Mechanism of action
Choline alfoscerate acts as a precursor of acetylcholine – the neurotransmitter responsible for memory, concentration and learning processes. Thanks to this it contributes to the improvement of cognitive functions and supports the protection of neurons against degeneration. It is also involved in the processes of building cell membranes, which is of significant importance for the health of the entire nervous system.

Health-promoting properties
The most important properties of choline alfoscerate include:
- Support for memory and concentration – it improves cognitive processes, particularly in older people.
- Neuroprotection – it protects nerve cells against damage caused by oxidative stress.
- Support for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases – used in supportive therapy in Alzheimer's disease, dementia and other dementia disorders.
- Support for athletes – some studies suggest an improvement in muscle regeneration and strength thanks to increased production of growth hormone.

Choline alfoscerate and the brain
Scientific studies have shown that supplementation with Alpha-GPC supports the functions of the brain by increasing the availability of choline and acetylcholine. Thanks to this it improves the ability to learn, concentration and the speed of information processing. It also has a protective effect on neurons, which is important in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases.
Application in medicine
Choline alfoscerate is used in neurology and psychiatry. It is applied as a supportive agent in the treatment of:
- Alzheimer's disease,
- senile dementia,
- post-traumatic memory disorders,
- age-related cognitive deficits.
In some countries it is registered as a medicinal product, whereas in others it is available mainly as a dietary supplement.

In sport and supplementation
Apart from its medical use, Alpha-GPC has gained popularity in the world of sport. Studies suggest that it may support the secretion of growth hormone, which favours muscle regeneration and an improvement in physical strength. For this reason it is often used as a supplement supporting physical and mental performance.

Safety of use
Choline alfoscerate is considered a safe substance at the recommended doses (300–1200 mg per day, depending on the application). It may, however, cause mild side effects such as headaches, nausea or insomnia, particularly when the intake is too high.
Summary
Choline alfoscerate (Alpha-GPC) is one of the best researched and most effective sources of choline. It supports memory, concentration and the regeneration of the brain, and also has a protective effect on the nervous system. Used in the supportive treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and in sports supplementation, it is a valuable addition to the diet for people who take care of their mental and physical condition.

My name is Dorota Wątróbska-Świetlikowska, I am a pharmacist and a scientist with a postdoctoral degree (habilitation) in pharmaceutical sciences. I decided to combine my scientific knowledge and my experience in order to create dietary supplements of the highest quality.
My passion and main area of research are submicron dispersed systems, such as submicron emulsions, liposomes and lipospheres. After obtaining my doctorate I turned my attention to the practical aspects of parenteral nutrition, combining the needs of the patient with the possibilities available to the pharmacist. Quality, safety and efficacy are the most important things for me, which is visible both in my scientific work and in my approach to creating Dwatro Laboratories® supplements.
