Liposomal dispersion – a modern form of transport for active ingredients

What liposomal dispersion is

Liposomal dispersion is an advanced technology that makes it possible to enclose active substances in microscopic vesicles built from phospholipids. Liposomes imitate the structure of cell membranes, which is why they behave exceptionally stably in the body and are perfectly well tolerated. In a liposomal dispersion the molecules of the nutrient are surrounded by a protective layer of phospholipids, which secures them against degradation in the digestive tract and increases the chances of their reaching the cells in an unchanged form. This is one of the most modern methods of raising the bioavailability of nutrients, particularly those that are poorly absorbed in traditional forms.

How liposomes are formed

Liposomes are formed in the process of mixing phospholipids with water or with an aqueous solution containing the active ingredient. As a result, the phospholipids spontaneously arrange themselves into double layers, forming tiny vesicles. The active substance is located inside them, while the outer layer protects it against oxidation, stomach acid and digestive enzymes. High-quality liposomal dispersions are characterised by an even distribution of the vesicles and by an appropriate particle size, which enables effective absorption even in the small intestine.

What distinguishes liposomal dispersion from other forms

Unlike tablets or classic capsules, liposomal dispersion guarantees the stability of ingredients that in normal conditions would undergo considerable decomposition. Thanks to their structure, which is similar to cell membranes, liposomes easily pass through biological barriers. They protect the active substance against contact with hydrochloric acid, transport it by the lymphatic route and release it only once it has reached the right place in the body. This is precisely why liposomes raise the effectiveness of supplementation to a level that is difficult to achieve with traditional forms.

The mechanism of action of liposomal dispersion

When liposomes enter the body, their phospholipid coating is recognised as something natural. Cells “absorb” liposomes through the process of fusion or endocytosis, introducing the active substance into the interior of the cell almost without losses. As a result the active ingredient works more intensively and faster. Liposomal dispersion reduces the need to use high doses, because almost every particle of the preparation reaches its destination. Thanks to this mechanism liposomes are used in medicine, pharmacy, supplementation and cosmetology.

The durability and safety of liposomes

Liposomal dispersions are exceptionally stable, because the phospholipids protect the ingredient against oxidation, and enclosing it in microvesicles prevents contact of the substance with water and air. They are also biocompatible – the body treats them as natural elements. High tolerance and the absence of toxicity mean that liposomal dispersions can be used in most people, including older people and those with a metabolic burden.

The use of liposomal dispersion in supplements

In supplementation, liposomal dispersion is used in the case of substances that have limited bioavailability or that degrade quickly, such as vitamin C, glutathione, coenzyme Q10, vitamin D3, choline, magnesium and curcumin. The use of liposomes considerably increases the concentration of these ingredients in the blood after supplementation and maintains it for longer. This solution makes it possible to achieve therapeutic effects with lower doses, minimising the burden on the digestive system.

Why liposomal dispersion is better than tablets

Tablets and capsules often undergo degradation during digestion, and some of the active ingredients decompose even before being absorbed. The effectiveness of such forms is often low, which forces the use of high doses. Liposomal dispersion eliminates this problem, because the phospholipid coating plays the role of a protective shield. In practice this means faster achievement of effects, better tolerance and smaller losses of the active substances.

Liposomal dispersion in cosmetology

In cosmetics, liposomes make it possible to transport care ingredients into the deeper layers of the skin. Thanks to this, liposomal cosmetics act more intensively than traditional creams. Liposomes support hydration, tissue regeneration, the rebuilding of the hydrolipid barrier and the soothing of irritation. Liposomal vitamin C, retinol, ferulic acid and peptides are used more and more often, since in this form they act more stably and more effectively.

Innovative liposomal dispersions at DWATRO Laboratories

The DWATRO Laboratories brand uses advanced liposomal dispersions in its products, drawing on the DWATRO®LIP technology, developed with maximum bioavailability and stability of the active ingredients in mind. DWATRO preparations are created from pharmaceutical phospholipids and are designed so that the size of the liposomes is optimal for absorption. The use of liposomal dispersion makes it possible to create products of higher effectiveness, particularly in the areas of detoxification, immunity, skin care and support for the nervous system.

Liposomal dispersion as the future of supplementation

Growing consumer awareness and the development of biotechnology mean that liposomal dispersions are becoming a standard in premium products. They open the way to creating supplements that work more intensively, faster and at lower doses. In the future this technology may dominate the nutraceutical market, because it is the closest to the natural mechanisms of transporting substances in the body.

Supplements for immunity

Summary

Liposomal dispersion is one of the most advanced solutions for increasing the bioavailability of active ingredients. Thanks to their structure, liposomes protect the active substances, transport them across biological barriers and deliver them directly to the cells. This technology has revolutionised supplementation and cosmetology, and the innovative DWATRO Laboratories formulas using liposomal dispersion are an example of the highest effectiveness and quality in modern supplementation. Liposomal dispersion is the future, which already today genuinely improves the absorbability and the action of key nutrients.

Dorota Wątróbska

My name is Dorota Wątróbska-Świetlikowska, I am a pharmacist and a scientist holding a habilitated doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences. I decided to combine my scientific knowledge and experience in order to create dietary supplements of the highest quality.

My passion and main area of research are submicron dispersion systems, such as submicron emulsions, liposomes and lipospheres. After obtaining my doctorate, I turned my attention to the practical aspects of parenteral nutrition, combining the needs of the patient with the possibilities of the pharmacist. Quality, safety and effectiveness are the most important things for me , which is visible both in my scientific work and in my approach to creating supplements from Dwatro Laboratories®.
