Bioflavonoids – properties, role in the body and significance in supplementation

What are bioflavonoids?

Bioflavonoids, also known as flavonoids, are natural chemical compounds from the polyphenol group which occur in plants and perform protective functions in them. It is they that are responsible for the intense colours of fruits, vegetables and flowers – from yellows, through reds, all the way to deep violets.

In the human body bioflavonoids act as strong antioxidants, supporting the neutralisation of free radicals and the protection of cells against oxidative stress. Thanks to this they play an important role in health prevention, supporting the circulatory system, immunity and regenerative processes.

Bioflavonoids in nature

The source of bioflavonoids is above all plants. The greatest amount of these compounds is found in:

  • citrus fruits (lemons, oranges, grapefruits),
  • berries and forest fruits (bilberries, raspberries, blackcurrants),
  • grapes and red wine,
  • green tea,
  • cocoa and dark chocolate,
  • onion, broccoli and peppers.

It is precisely the variety of a diet rich in plants that determines how many bioflavonoids reach our body.

Classification and types of bioflavonoids

Scientists distinguish several main classes of bioflavonoids, which differ in structure and in action:

  • Flavonols – e.g. quercetin, kaempferol (onion, kale, apples).
  • Flavanones – e.g. naringenin, hesperidin (citrus fruits).
  • Anthocyanins – pigments that give red and violet colours (berries, cherries, grapes).
  • Isoflavones – present in soya, they support the hormonal balance.
  • Catechins – green tea is particularly rich in them.

Each of these groups shows specific health properties, but they are all united by a strong antioxidant action.

Health-promoting properties of bioflavonoids

Strong antioxidant protection

Bioflavonoids neutralise free radicals, which accelerate the processes of ageing and increase the risk of chronic diseases.

Support for the circulatory system

Studies indicate that bioflavonoids improve the elasticity of blood vessels, regulate blood pressure and lower the risk of atherosclerosis.

Strengthening immunity

Thanks to their interplay with vitamin C, bioflavonoids support the functioning of the immune system and increase the body's resistance.

Anti-inflammatory properties

They reduce inflammation, which may be important in the prevention of degenerative and autoimmune diseases.

Potential anticancer protection

Some bioflavonoids influence the processes of cell proliferation, which is why they are being studied in terms of supporting cancer prevention.

Bioavailability of bioflavonoids

Although bioflavonoids have enormous health potential, their bioavailability (the extent to which they are absorbed and used by the body) may be limited. Many compounds undergo rapid metabolism in the liver and in the intestines.

In order to increase bioavailability, supplement manufacturers – including DWATRO Laboratories – use modern technologies, such as liposomal forms or combinations of bioflavonoids with other ingredients (e.g. vitamin C), which work more effectively together.

Bioflavonoids in supplementation

Because of their beneficial influence on health, bioflavonoids are increasingly used in dietary supplements. They can be found in formulas:

  • that support immunity (with vitamin C and zinc),
  • for the circulatory system and the heart,
  • that aid regeneration and the protection of cells,
  • with an anti-ageing action.

In the supplements of the DWATRO brand, bioflavonoids appear as natural support for antioxidants, which underlines their synergistic action and their practical application in everyday prevention.

How to increase the intake of bioflavonoids in the diet?

Not only technology, but also everyday eating habits matter for bioavailability. It is worth following a few simple rules:

  • Consume vitamin C together with plant products rich in iron in order to increase its absorption.
  • Combine fat-soluble vitamins with meals that contain healthy vegetable oils or avocado.
  • Avoid excessive consumption of coffee and tea while taking mineral supplements, as tannins hinder absorption.
  • Follow a varied diet, which naturally supplies synergistic ingredients that support absorption.

Summary

Bioavailability is a key concept in dietetics and pharmacology which decides to what extent the body will actually use the nutrients or medicines taken. A high bioavailability means better effectiveness and greater health benefits, while a low one may make supplementation barely effective. Thanks to modern technologies, such as liposomes or chelates, manufacturers increase the bioavailability of supplements ever more effectively. Equally important, however, are conscious dietary choices, which can naturally support the absorption process.

My name is Dorota Wątróbska-Świetlikowska, I am a pharmacist and a scientist holding a habilitated doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences. I decided to combine my scientific knowledge and my experience in order to create dietary supplements of the highest quality.

My passion and my main area of research are submicron dispersion systems, such as submicron emulsions, liposomes and lipospheres. After obtaining my doctorate, I turned my attention to the practical aspects of parenteral nutrition, combining the needs of the patient with the capabilities of the pharmacist. Quality, safety and efficacy are the most important things for me , which is visible both in my scientific work and in my approach to creating supplements for Dwatro Laboratories®.
